Pneumomediastinum after SCUBA diving

چکیده
A pneumomediastinum is a condition in which air is present in the mediastinum. It can result from a pulmonary barotrauma which occurs during sCUBA (self contained underwater breathing apparatus) diving. We report on a fifteen-year-old patient who suffered from a pulmonary barotrauma including a pneumomediastinum after sCUBA diving. The patient was admitted to the PICU (Paediatric Intensive Care Unit) and treated conservatively. subsequently the patient developed neurological deficits resulting from an arterial gas embolism (AGE). This case report discusses some of the principles of the pathophysiology and clinical presentation of diving emergencies.

Spontaneous pneumomediastinum in a scuba diver.
Pneumomediastinum usually occurs following an airleak from the lungs, or from a perforated oesophagus. We report on a 30-year-old man who developed pneumomediastinum after scuba diving. The patient presented with acute onset of throat pain, odynophagia, and hoarseness of voice. The literature is reviewed for this condition.
متن کاملThe Effect of 20 Minutes Scuba Diving on Cognitive Function of Professional Scuba Divers
BACKGROUND Physical activity increases the performance of the nervous system by stimulating the body's metabolism and improving the efficiency of the ATP production system. OBJECTIVES In the present study, the effect of twenty minutes scuba diving in high depth (10m) on cognitive function and stress system activity was investigated. METHODS Twelve professional scuba divers with a mean age o...
متن کاملDoes recreational scuba diving have clinically significant effect on routine haematological parameters?
INTRODUCTION Scuba diving represents a combination of exercise and changes in environmental conditions. This study aimed to evaluate changes in haematological parameters after recreational scuba diving in order to identify clinically significant changes. MATERIALS AND METHODS The study included males, 17 recreational divers, median age (range) 41 (30-52) years. Blood samples were taken before...
متن کاملSonographic detection of spontaneous pneumomediastinum.
pontaneous pneumomediastinum is an uncommon benign disease that mainly affects young, tall, and thin male patients without evidence of trauma or other underlying pulmonary disease. It is a condition caused by an increase of intrathoracic pressure and air leaking from the trachea, bronchi, alveoli, or esophagus into the mediastinum. Although it is often a self-limiting disease, it requires admis...
متن کاملScuba diving enhances endogenous antioxidant defenses in lymphocytes and neutrophils.
The aim was to study the effects of a scuba diving session on the lymphocyte antioxidant system, NO synthesis, the capability to produce reactive oxygen species and the antioxidant response in neutrophils. For that purpose seven male divers performed an immersion at a depth of 40 m for 25 min. The same parameters were measured after an hyperbaric oxygen (HBO) treatment at resting conditions in ...
